It is not an unknown fact that Lord Shiva was enraged when he came to know that Sati had immolated herself unable to bear the humiliation her father, Daksha Prajapathi had meted out to her during the Yagyna. Upon hearing the news of Sati’s immolation, Shiva’s anger knew no bounds and performed the "Tandava" (the dance of destruction) and forcibly plucked out a lock of his hair from his matted locks and threw to the ground. A huge volcano leaped from the spot and from the fire came – Veerabhadra Swamy "Shiva’s anger personified". From every spark of fire from the volcano arose another smaller volcano and from it came out a smaller figure resembling Veerabhadra Swamy. An army of millions of Veerabhadras marched towards Daksha Prajapathi’s palace as they only knew death and vengeance. They destroyed whatever they saw. Finally, On the banks of River Gauthami, a branch of River Godavari, flanked by striking farms, wide spread paddy fields, cattle grazing and ploughing the lush fields surrounded by coconut gardens stands proud, the Sri Bhadrakali Sametha Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple of Muramalla. It is believed that devotees who still haven’t got married, who find it difficult to get good proposals, get married with just a mere visit to this temple. Not only that, childless couples, and couples who do not get along will find respite here. Veerabhadra Swamy found Daksha Prajapathi and cut off his head. But Prasuti, the wife of Daksha, prayed to Lord Shiva for her husband’s life. Shiva granted it and Veerabhadra Swamy placed a goat’s head on Daksha’s body. But even after this, Veerabhadra Swamy could not be pacified. Fearing this, the revered saints and other Gods prayed to Sri Maha Vishnu to pacify Veerabhadra Swamy. Sri Maha Vishnu in the disguise of Lord Narasimha Swamy went to meet Veerabhadra Swamy. But Veerabhadra Swamy caught Lord Narasimha Swamy by the waist and refused to let go. Leaving his avatar of Lord Narasimha Swamy, Sri Maha Vishnu informed Lord Brahma, the creator about Veerabhadra Swamy. The great Trinity viz. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva along with the other Gods prayed to Adi Parashakthi. She then sent Bhadrakali- a form/avatar (out of 16 forms/avatars) of Adi Parashakthi. Bhadrakali approached Veerabhadra Swamy in the disguise of a young girl. Seeing her Veerabhadra Swamy pacified. With the blessings of all the saints, Gods, and the Trinity (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva), Sri Veerabhadra Swamy and Bhadrakali were married according to Gandharva Vivaham custom. Since then, the priests here have been performing the Kalyanam (the celestial wedding) everyday in the early hours as well as at night, where Veerabhadra Swamy is dressed up as a bridegroom which is then followed by Pavalimpu Seva.

The ancient temple of Sri Veereswara Swamy and Goddess Bhadrakali lies twenty-five kilometers from Amalapuram town in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is in the Muramalla village on the banks of the river Gauthami, a branch of the river Godavari. The Goddess Bhadrakali shares the same sanctum as Veerabhadra Swamy, to appease him. The temple fell into the river due to natural calamities, including massive floods, and became severely damaged. The story goes that over a hundred years ago, a local man of noble gentry, Sarabha Raju of Komaragiri, saw Veerabhadraswamy in his dreams. God wanted to rebuild the temple, which was in a dilapidated condition. Sarabha Raju was carrying the Shiva Lingam to a new place, and the Lingam turned out to be too heavy to carry. God appeared and advised the nobleman to have the Lingam installed on the premise where the old temple lay in Muramalla. Routu Peramma, a Dravidian queen, rescued by God when her boat overturned in the Bay of Bengal, built the Kalyana Mandapam for the temple. The local theory is that any unmarried adult visiting the Sri Veereswara and Goddess Bhadrakali temple in Muramalla village even just once will soon get a suitable proposal for marriage. Not just devotees witness the Nitya Kalyanam of Sri Veerabhadra Swamy, for belief goes that great sages, including Agastya, Vishwamitra, Vasishta, Gowthama, Vyasa, Bhargava, Bharadwaj, Sukudu, Marichidu, Markendeyudu, Kasyapudu, and Narada also witness the Nitya Kalyanam. The temple celebrates festivals that include Maha Shivaratri, Laksha Rudraksha, and the annual Brahmotsavam festivals. They commemorate the Pushkaranadi Jalabhishekam and Chandi Homam with religious fervor. The Muramalla temple also performs the Gau Pooja, Panchamrutha Abishekam (sacred wash), and the Nityakalyanam Pooja. The temple performs rituals that include Annaprasanna, Mahanyasam, and Vahana pooja. According to legend, Lord Shiva and Bhadrakali married in Gandharva style at Munimandala (now Muramalla) to appease a furious Rudra. The Munimandala was a congregation of sages, and is where the celestial wedding is still performed nightly. The sages who witness the wedding include Agastya, Suka, Viswamitra, Vasishta, Goutam, Bhargava, Bharadwaja, Mareecha, Kasyapa, Markandeya, and Narada.
